Field blocks
Use a Field block to collect an answer while someone completes a Guide.
Use a Field block to ask one question and collect an answer while someone completes a Guide. The block holds the prompt and one or more answer methods. When several methods are available, the player chooses how to answer.
Add a Field block
- Open the Guide in the editor and select Add block on the page.
- Choose Field to start without an answer method, or choose a named Field preset to start with one configured method.
- In Prompt, enter a Name that helps authors identify the block in the editor. The Name is not the default label in reports. Write the player-facing question under Field prompt; this is also the default report label.
- Set Response requirement to Optional or Required. In a live Guide, a required Field must receive a valid answer through one of its active methods before the player can continue from that page.
- Under Answer methods, select an active method to configure it, or use Add method to add an available method type.
- Select Save block to apply the draft, then test the page in Guide preview. Clicking outside the dialog does not close it.
A raw Field starts with no answer methods. Add and configure one before preview or play.
Manage answer methods
Available methods include Type details, Tap choice, Scale, Number, Photo, IRL completion, Speak answer, Signature, and Whiteboard. Methods already listed in the editor are active. Add method only offers method types not currently present.
On desktop, select methods from the editor sidebar. On mobile, use the touch-friendly method tabs. Drag a method by its reorder handle to change its position. Open a method to change its Label, duplicate it, or remove it; removal requires confirmation. The Label identifies the method in the player’s answer chooser, so keep each one short and distinct.
Each method has its own setup. Advanced settings appear only where supported and can include validation, reports, evidence, observations, and after-submit behavior. For choice setup, see Tap choice answers.
Link the Field
Open Linking to connect compatible answers to a Form field or Person Record target. Form mapping requires a target Form. Available Form and Person Record targets depend on the active answer methods and Guide setup.
When a choice answer is linked to a choice target, use Choice conversion to match the Field’s final choices to the target’s options. Read any warning or confirmation before saving a link, especially when Form and Person Record links overlap.
Configure speech
Open Speech to control how CareMap reads the Field prompt aloud. Set a spoken-text override, audio, cloud voice, or accessibility labels and hints. See Guide speech and cloud voices.
Block Speech is different from the Speak answer method. Speech plays the authored prompt; Speak answer lets the player provide an answer by speech or a configured typed fallback.
Set report labels
For methods that support report settings, open Advanced settings to include the answer in reports or set a custom Report label. If that label is blank, CareMap uses the Field prompt, then the method Label, then the method type.
What players see
With one method, its answer control opens directly. With several, the player first chooses an answer method and can use Change to return to the chooser. Required Fields count as complete only after one method passes its configured validation and evidence rules.
Fix common problems
- No answer controls appear: Edit the block, add and configure an answer method, then save it.
- The player cannot continue: Complete a valid answer for each required Field on the page, including any required evidence.
- A method is hard to identify: Give every method a short, unique label.
