Photo answers

Use a Photo answer method when a player needs to capture or choose an image as evidence while completing a Guide. The photo is saved with the Field answer and can appear in the completed Guide Report when that answer method is included in reports.

Add a Photo answer method

You need permission to edit the Guide.

1. Open the Guide in the editor and select the Field block that should collect the photo.
2. Open Answer methods, select Add method, and choose Photo.
3. Enter Instructions that tell the player exactly what to photograph. A Photo method without instructions is flagged as unusable in the Guide review.
4. Optionally choose a Reference image for the authoring settings. This image helps authors configure the method; it is not shown to the player and is not submitted as their answer.
5. Review the Field block's required setting and the Photo method's report settings, then save your changes.
6. Run Preview to confirm that the prompt and Photo method are clear. Preview answers do not create a Report.

If the Field block offers several answer methods, the player can select Photo from the available methods. Make the Field prompt and Photo instructions clear enough that the player knows when to choose it.

Complete a Photo answer

1. Select the Photo method if the Field offers more than one answer method.
2. Select Choose photo.
3. Capture or select an image. On a supported mobile device, the browser or app may offer the camera or photo library. On web and desktop, the system normally opens an image file picker.
4. Check the preview while CareMap uploads and processes the image.
5. When processing finishes, review the image and select Submit photo. Only this action accepts the answer and starts any configured next action or delay.

Choosing a file starts preparation, not submission. Select Choose another image to replace the candidate and review it again. Cancelling the picker keeps the current candidate. While reviewing a replacement, the previously submitted photo remains the accepted answer; Keep submitted photo abandons the replacement. A failed upload or submission does not erase that accepted answer. Submission retries reuse the prepared image.

The Photo method accepts image files and uses the first image selected. If the device asks for camera or photo-library access, allow the permission needed for the source you want to use. Available sources depend on the device, browser, and operating-system settings.

Required answers and Reports

Photo evidence must finish saving before the Photo method is complete. If the Field block is required, the player cannot complete the Guide without a saved answer for that block. An optional Field block can be skipped.

Keep the app available and connected while the photo uploads and processes. Submit photo is unavailable until the candidate is ready. An unsubmitted candidate does not satisfy a required Field or appear as submitted Report evidence. Leaving or resetting the player cannot submit a candidate in the background. Existing submitted photos remain accepted when reopened, without replaying their next action. Preview photos remain temporary and do not create production Reports.

When the Photo method is included in reports, the saved image evidence is available with the Field answer to people who can access that Guide Report.

Fix common problems

• The Photo method shows an authoring warning: Add specific Photo instructions, then save the Guide.
• The camera or photo library does not open: Check the app or browser permissions in the device settings. You can use another available image source if the picker offers one.
• CareMap says to choose an image file: Select a supported image instead of a document, video, or other file type.
• The photo preview remains in an error state: Select Retry photo upload, or select Choose another image. The local preview remains visible so you can confirm which photo needs attention.
• The upload is pending or needs review: Restore connectivity and wait for processing. Then review the preview and select Submit photo.
• Submission failed: Keep the prepared preview and select Submit photo again after resolving the displayed error; a successful upload is reused.
• The wrong photo was submitted: Select Choose another image, review the replacement, and select Submit photo to accept it.
• Players cannot see the reference image: Reference images belong to the authoring settings. Put all player-facing directions in the Photo instructions.
