Field requirements, validation, and report labels

Distinguish required questions, method validation, evidence readiness, and Include in reports.

A Field's required setting applies to the question. Validation and report settings belong to each answer method. Configure them separately so learners can finish the question and reviewers receive useful results.

You need edit access to the Guide to change these settings.

Require an answer

  1. Edit the Field and open Content.
  2. Set Response requirement to Required or Optional.
  3. Add and configure at least one answer method.
  4. Review that method's validation and evidence settings.
  5. Select Save block.
  6. Check the inputs in Preview, then verify required-answer behavior in Play.

In Play, a required Field needs an accepted answer from at least one method before guarded forward navigation or completion. It does not require every method. A saved explicit Skip can satisfy the requirement, so offer Skip only when opting out is appropriate.

An empty Field with no methods cannot collect the required response. Preview does not enforce the same departure guards as Play; being able to leave in Preview is not proof that a live learner can proceed.

Validate the chosen method

Open the method's Advanced settings where available:

  • Type can require minimum and maximum character lengths.
  • Multiple-selection Options can limit the selection count.
  • Number uses its configured range and decimal policy; Slider can use an increment and default value.
  • Helper text explains the expected answer. A custom validation message is offered where supported; Slider does not expose that control.

Choose limits that can be satisfied together. A minimum length or selection rule validates a supplied answer; it does not by itself make the whole Field required.

Other methods have their own completion rules. For example, category sorting needs a submitted arrangement, and Completion needs explicit confirmation. Photo and Whiteboard answers need ready image evidence; Signature needs a signature. Completion's supporting photo can be optional or required. A pending or failed required upload is not ready evidence.

Saving a draft and explicitly submitting it can be different steps. Follow the method's visible controls and resolve any error. See its linked article from the Field overview.

Control report wording

In each method's Advanced settings:

  1. Leave Include in reports enabled to include its answer in Guide reports, or turn it off to omit that method's Guide answer entry.
  2. Set Report label when the default question wording is unsuitable.
  3. Add Report help text for the reviewer when needed.
  4. Save the block.

The default label uses the Field prompt, then the method label or type. The editor's Block name is not the default answer label. Report label/help controls are disabled when inclusion is off.

Excluding an answer from Guide reports does not delete the saved response, remove required-answer rules, or prevent a separate Form mapping from using it. Treat report inclusion as a presentation setting, not an access or confidentiality control.

If progress is blocked, finish the named Field, resolve its current validation or media error, and use the offered retry. With Reset after leaving page, an earlier visit's answer does not satisfy the new visit.
