Type answers

Enter, save, submit, and correct written answers in a Guide Field, with separate save and sync status.

Use Type for a written response in a Guide Field. Authors need Guide edit access to configure it. People playing the Guide can enter or revise their answer; saving the text and submitting the response are separate steps.

Configure Type

  1. Open the Field's Answer methods and use Add answer method → Type, or select an existing Type method.
  2. Set Placeholder to an example or short instruction. Set Answer length to Single line or Multiline.
  3. In Advanced settings, optionally enter Min length, Max length, Helper text, and Error text. Limits count the saved text after leading and trailing spaces are removed.
  4. Review Include in reports, the Report wording, and after-submit actions.
  5. Set the Field's Response requirement, select Save block, and test in Preview.

Keep Min length at or below Max length. If there are multiple methods, use Button label and chooser settings to explain which response to select. Placeholder text is a hint, not a saved answer.

Enter and submit an answer

  1. Choose Type when the Field offers a method chooser.
  2. Enter your response. Pause for about one second or leave the answer box to save automatically.
  3. Read the save status and correct any validation error.
  4. Select Submit when ready. CareMap saves the current text first, then accepts the completed response and runs its configured action.

Automatic saving does not run Type's after-submit action. Submitted means the response was accepted for this visit; it does not by itself confirm that synchronization with the server has finished. Submitting only finishes the Guide if its authored action does so.

Editing the text makes Submit available again. Clearing the box and allowing it to save removes this method's saved answer; an empty response cannot be submitted. In Multiline, Enter inserts a new line. Use the Submit button to complete the response.

With Return to response methods, successful submission returns to the chooser. Ordinary autosave keeps you in the answer. See retained responses and page resets.

Understand save status

StatusWhat it means
Unsaved changes / Changes not savedThe current edit has not been accepted; check the displayed error.
Answer savedThe saved answer has no pending sync shown.
Sync pendingThe answer is queued for synchronization.
Sync needs retry / Answer kept on this device; sync failedCheck session sync before relying on the server copy.
Answer kept in this previewThe answer belongs to this practice preview.
No answer savedThis method has no saved text.

Fix common problems

For a length error, change the text to meet the displayed rule. For a save failure, check the connection and use Retry save; retrying a failed Submit also retries response completion. If a Report lacks the text, check that it saved and Include in reports was enabled. Preview practice answers stay out of the Reports inbox. See Field requirements and Reports.
