Audio Recording answers

Configure recorded or uploaded audio answers, understand capture limits, and keep answer recording separate from Guide speech.

Use Audio Recording when someone should respond aloud or supply an audio file as a Guide Field answer. The player reviews the clip and selects Submit recording. Authors need Guide edit access.

Configure the method

  1. Edit the Field and open Answer methods.
  2. Choose Add answer method → Audio Recording.
  3. Give the method a useful name and customize Instructions to explain what to say. Clear Instructions to hide this copy; older methods without an authored instruction setting use the default wording.
  4. Review Advanced settings, including Report inclusion, label/help text, and the action after a successful submit.
  5. Set the Field's Response requirement, then select Save block.
  6. Test microphone recording and file upload in Preview.

Instructions appear during capture and review. They are hidden in the resting submitted-answer view and return while preparing a replacement.

Use record, submit, and replace audio for the player workflow. Simply stopping a recording or choosing a file is not acceptance.

Capture and upload limits

Microphone capture stops automatically at five minutes so the player can review the clip. Recordings and uploaded files must be non-empty and no larger than 50 MB.

Upload audio is available even when a microphone is supported. The picker offers AAC, MP4/M4A, MP3, Ogg, WAV, and WebM audio. The selected file must load successfully in the current browser's review player before submission. An audio filename or listed format alone does not guarantee playback support.

If microphone capture is unavailable, the player can upload a playable audio file. The browser or app needs microphone permission to record. There is no microphone-selection control in this method; choose the desired input through the device's own settings.

Audio is separate from speech and text

Audio Recording captures an answer. The Field's Speech tab, authored speech recordings, Cloud voice, Voice Profiles, and device speech rate control spoken playback. They do not choose the microphone or turn the recording into text. See Guide speech.

New audio answers do not provide a typed-transcript fallback. Add a Type method when a typed response is appropriate. Older saved transcript responses can still be displayed; this does not enable new transcription.

Required responses, Forms, and Reports

A review clip does not satisfy a required Field. A submitted answer can still show audio processing; wait for ready media before continuing where required.

For Form mapping, use an Upload field that accepts audio. A text mapping available for older transcript answers cannot consume a new recording. See mapping compatibility.

When included in Reports, accepted audio can be played or downloaded by people with Report access. Transcript-length rules do not validate recorded audio. Preview practice stays out of the Reports inbox.

If capture, playback, submission, or processing fails, follow audio recovery steps. For silent prompts rather than answer capture, use speech troubleshooting.
