Guide speech and cloud voices
Add spoken wording or audio, choose cloud voices, and prepare Guide speech.
CareMap can speak a page or supported block using recorded audio, prepared cloud speech, or the device's built-in voice. Written content, captions, and Alt text should still carry the important meaning.
Choose what CareMap speaks
Open Page settings > Speech to configure page narration:
- Speech on page visit replaces the wording CareMap would otherwise build from the page's speakable blocks.
- Auto-speak on entry can follow the player's setting, always suggest speaking, or never auto-speak for that page.
Supported blocks also have a Speech tab. Use it to provide a spoken text override, recorded or uploaded speech audio, a Cloud voice, and useful accessible labels or hints.
During Preview or Play, Speak page and Speak block let the player start speech. The player can pause, resume, or stop it. An automatic-speech setting does not remove these manual controls.
Choose a cloud voice
Create named profiles under Settings > Accessibility > Voices. Then use Cloud voice in Guide, Sequence, Page, or Block settings.
The most specific selection wins: Block, then Page, Sequence, and Guide. When none is selected, CareMap uses the learner's default Voice Profile, the Platform Default, or device speech. Recorded Guide speech takes priority over generated speech for the same content.
Selecting a profile for authored Guide speech saves an independent copy of its voice and speed. Later edits to that profile do not change the Guide.
Prepare and publish speech
The Guide's Cloud voice section shows preparation status and how many Speakables are resolved. Wait for Speech ready before publishing when the published version should contain all authored generated speech. Preparation can use the Guide workspace's AI credits, and prepared authored speech counts toward that workspace's storage.
If Catalog publishing offers Force-publish without pending generated speech, use it only when learner or device fallback is acceptable for the omitted speech. A Catalog version is an immutable snapshot.
For offline use, refresh the Guide package after speech or the learner's default Voice Profile changes. Ready recorded and prepared speech is included when possible; missing or dynamic speech uses the device voice while offline.
Fix common problems
- Speech changes pending: Keep the Guide saved and allow preparation to finish. Read any credit, storage, or voice warning beside the status.
- The wrong voice plays: Check the Block, Page, Sequence, and Guide choices in that order, then check the learner's default Voice Profile.
- Device speech plays instead: The selected cloud speech was not ready or playable quickly enough. CareMap uses device speech so playback can continue.
- An old profile change is missing: Select the updated profile again in the Guide; authored selections do not follow later profile edits.
