Sort items into categories

Let players assign each item to a category and submit an ungraded response.

Use Sort into categories when a player should put each item in one group. Use Order instead when the position of items in a single sequence matters. Existing Order configurations and answers are unchanged.

Configure the activity

  1. Open a Field block, add an answer method, and choose Sort into categories.
  2. Add 2–20 categories, each with a unique non-empty label.
  3. Add 1–100 items with unique labels and optional images. Labels can contain up to 240 characters; capitalization alone does not make labels different.
  4. Save the block. Categories and items retain their identities when renamed.

Answer the activity

In Settings > Accessibility > Guide, set Category answer interaction to Drag (the default) or Dropdown. This choice belongs to your account and applies in both Guide play and preview; it does not change the author's activity.

Items begin in Unassigned. In Drag mode, drag an item's handle into a category or select Move… to reveal a category menu usable with a keyboard, touch, or pointer. In Dropdown mode, each item's category menu is always visible and there are no drag handles. Move an item again to change its assignment, or choose Unassigned to undo it. Changing your interaction preference preserves your answers and never submits them.

Moves save as drafts without running submission actions. Assign every item and select Submit to finish. A required Field is not satisfied by a draft, even when every item has been placed. If saving fails, the assignment stays available and Retry save retries it. A saved response can be edited and submitted again.

This initial method records categorization; it does not grade answers or have a correct-category key. Reports show category and item labels. Draft reports also identify unassigned items. Available configured images travel with offline Guide packages. Changes made offline use the normal session synchronization flow.
