Options answers

Let someone choose from flat or nested answer options in a Guide Field.

Use an Options answer method when a player should select from options you provide in a Guide Field. Options can be flat or nested. Flat options can also allow multiple selections or an Other response. You need edit access.

If every item must remain in the answer and the player should arrange their order, use Order answers instead.

Add the answer method

  1. Open the Guide and select the Field block that asks the question.
  2. Open Answer methods, select Add method, and choose Options.
  3. Give the method a clear label.
  4. Under Options, select Option to add a root option, or select an existing option to open Edit options.

Manage the option tree

Edit options shows the reorderable tree and the selected option's properties. In the tree, you can:

  • add a root option or a child option;
  • reparent or reorder an option with its complete subtree;
  • duplicate an option with all of its children; or
  • delete an option and its complete subtree after confirmation.

An Options tree can contain up to 10 levels. CareMap blocks additions, duplications, or moves that would exceed that depth. Select Save to apply the flyout draft to the block editor, or Cancel to discard it.

Give each option a meaningful Label. You can also set a stored Value, enter an Icon, choose or upload an Image, and select an intent-based Effect. For final options in a single-select method, you can also choose an optional Result Image. The normal Image appears while the player is choosing; the Result Image replaces it only after that option is confirmed. Labels must be unique within their level; stored Values must be unique throughout the tree.

Hide visible label hides only the player-facing caption on the page canvas, preview, and player. Both authoring option trees still show the Label, regardless of the player's hide-label preference. Speech, Reports, routing, and accessible names keep using the semantic label. Saving a renamed option updates the parent list immediately; Save block commits it to the Guide.

Every option can request an Effect, including groups that open sub-options. The Effect is Positive, Negative, Neutral, or None; the player's settings determine the actual visual treatment. CareMap plays an option's Effect only after that option's answer path saves successfully. See Visual Effects.

Build a nested option path

An option with children becomes a group. Selecting a group immediately saves that parent as a valid partial answer and Report path, opens its children, and plays the group's Effect after the save succeeds. Selecting a child extends and replaces the saved path, then plays that child's Effect after its own successful save. If the player stops before selecting a final option, the saved parent path remains a valid answer and can appear in the Report.

A final option confirms the collapsed answer and can run its routing. The saved answer and Report show the selected path, such as Meal / Breakfast / Oatmeal.

Nested options are single-select, so adding sub-options disables multiple selection. Other remains available only at the root, and the visible path lets players move back through groups. Change answer clears the saved path and returns to the root. A Result Image can be added to a final nested option, not to a group that opens more sub-options.

Set option behavior and routing

Under Option behavior, choose whether a flat list allows multiple selections, uses a Grid or List presentation, or accepts Other text. Customize the Other label and placeholder as needed. Grid is the default and uses centered image tiles. List shows each option as a full-width row with an optional leading image or icon. Advanced settings can set selection limits and helper or error text.

A final single-select option can continue normally, go to a page, start a sequence, or end the Guide. Groups never route, and per-option routing is unavailable with multiple selection. After submit is the method-wide fallback.

For a final single-select option, choose a categorized splash under After selecting, then set Then to one follow-up action, such as Next page. Feedback starts when the answer is accepted; the action follows Outcome timing, including immediate continuation for an explicit zero. The option's configured outcome replaces the method fallback; both do not run together. Groups and multiple-selection options do not gain these terminal actions.

Select Save in Edit options, review the method's advanced settings, then select Save block and preview the Guide.

Choose an answer in a Guide

  1. Select Options if the Field offers more than one answer method.
  2. A flat single option saves automatically and collapses to the confirmed answer. If the selected option has a Result Image, that larger image is shown in the confirmed answer. Change answer clears it and reopens every option.
  3. With multiple selection, select or clear every option that applies. Confirmed selections stay highlighted, while unselected options remain visible and dimmed. Each change saves automatically.
  4. For a nested option, each selected parent saves the path before its children open. Continue to a final option when needed, or leave the saved parent as a partial answer. Use the visible path to move back. Change answer clears the path and returns to the root.
  5. When Other is available, enter a non-empty response. It saves after a short pause and can accompany selected options in multiple-select mode.

There is no separate Save answer button. Wait for confirmation before leaving the page. If a save fails, your options remain available while you retry.

Grid tiles keep labels in a separate row below their image or icon. Confirmed single-select Result Images keep the label and selected check, but give the image more space when the viewport allows it. Columns respond to available space instead of a fixed desktop or mobile count. If the player turns on the Large tiles accessibility preference, a List remains a list and only gets larger thumbnails and touch targets. Multiple-selection answers ignore Result Images and keep every option visible.

Reports

Reports can show saved labels, a nested answer's saved parent or final path, Other text, and option visuals. Preview answers do not create a Report.

Fix common problems

  • Authoring warning: Add an option and make every Label non-empty and unique.
  • Route does not run: Use a final option, turn off multiple selection, and confirm that the destination exists.
  • Answer does not save: Satisfy any selection limit, then check the connection and select Retry save.
  • Answer is absent from the Report: Confirm it saved and Include in reports is on.
