Appearance, media, and speech

CareMap separates Guide identity, page presentation, content media, and spoken support. Use each layer for its intended purpose, then Preview the Guide on the devices people will use.

You need Guide authoring access and permission to edit its Library folder to change these settings. A player's own Accessibility preferences can adjust text, motion, navigation, and speech without changing the authored Guide.

Set the Guide cover

1. Open the Guide from Library, select Edit, then open Guide > Guide settings.
2. In the Guide section, select Choose cover image. Upload an image or choose another available source.
3. Review the preview and select Save guide.

The cover identifies the Guide in Library cards and details. It does not become the background for every page. Use Page settings when the experience itself needs a color or image behind its content.

Design a page

1. Select the page and open Page > Page settings.
2. Under Layout, choose Linear, Cards, or Two column. Two-column content collapses for narrower phone screens.
3. Under Background, choose a semantic Page color. To add an image, select Choose page background image, then set its fit and focal position.
4. Select Save page, then Preview at both wide and narrow sizes when the Guide will be used across devices.

A page background sits behind every block. Use it for supporting presentation, not as the only place for instructions or essential information. Keep text and controls readable over the selected color or image.

Add content media

Use a Media block when an image, video, or audio recording is part of the page content. Media blocks can provide visible captions, image Alt text, and player controls that a background image cannot.

1. Select Add block, choose Media, and select Image, Video, or Audio.
2. Upload or reuse an available source and complete its visible accessibility and playback settings.
3. Wait for the upload and processing status to become ready, select Save block, and test the complete media in Preview.

Audio begins only when the player uses its control. Video autoplay can also be limited by browser or device rules. See Media blocks for source, format, caption, and recovery details.

Add spoken support

Open Page settings > Speech to control page narration:

• Speech on page visit provides custom spoken wording. When it is empty, CareMap builds page speech from the page's speakable blocks.
• Auto-speak on entry can Follow player setting, Always suggest speaking, or Never auto-speak for that page.

Supported blocks also provide Speech settings for an optional spoken text override, recorded or uploaded speech audio, a cloud voice, and accessibility labels or hints. A cloud voice can be set for the Guide, Sequence, Page, or Block. In Preview and Play, the player can use the page or block speech controls to start, pause, resume, or stop supported speech.

The player manages their default Voice Profile and device speech rate under Accessibility settings. Spoken support should reinforce written content, useful image Alt text, and captions; it should not be the only way to receive important information.

Fix common problems

• If a background image is missing, reopen Background, choose an available source, wait for the upload to finish, and save the page again.
• If text is hard to read, choose a clearer semantic Page color, adjust the background fit or position, or use a simpler image.
• If Media is unavailable, wait for its ready status or replace the source, then Preview again. Check the device connection and playback controls.
• If speech does not start, confirm that the page or block has speakable text, review Auto-speak on entry, and check the device's Accessibility and audio settings.
• If Warnings reports missing media or speech content, open the named page or block, repair the source or wording, save it, and repeat Preview.
