Guide appearance and behavior defaults

Set Surface tone, Field answer display, navigation, and speech defaults, with personal and Sequence overrides.

Choose Guide > Guide settings > Appearance & behavior in the editor. These are authored defaults for this Guide. Personal preferences and more specific settings can change the result, so Preview with the intended player's needs in mind.

You need permission to edit the Guide and a workspace that permits authoring. Select Save guide after changing these defaults.

Choose appearance and answer presentation

Surface tone offers Default, Soft, and High contrast. It controls the fallback treatment of Guide surfaces, not the page's background image or the content of a Media block.

Field answer display offers Summary and Compact for the presentation of completed Field answers. This does not select answer methods, make a Field required, or decide whether an answer appears in a Report.

The player's personal Surface tone and Field answer display take priority. A personal Surface tone of Default is still a chosen personal value; it does not mean “inherit this Guide's tone.” A Guide change can therefore save correctly without changing what your account currently sees.

Set navigation defaults

Choose which controls the Guide offers by default:

  • Show previous button for moving back when a previous destination exists.
  • Show next button for advancing through a sequence.
  • Show page dots for page-position navigation.
  • Enable swipe navigation for horizontal navigation gestures.

Use Sequence settings for explicit choices on an individual sequence. These switches affect controls; they do not create routes, make another sequence reachable, or bypass required answers and page navigation locks. The final Finish action remains available when no next page exists, even if Next is hidden or locked, subject to required-answer checks. See Page navigation locks.

Understand which setting wins

BehaviorPriority when the relevant settings are present
Surface tone and Field answer displayPlayer preference, then Guide default
Previous and Next buttonsExplicit Sequence choice, then player preference, then Guide default
Page dotsExplicit Sequence choice, then Guide default
Swipe navigationPlayer preference, then explicit Sequence choice, then Guide default

For example, hiding Next at Guide level may not hide it in a sequence with an explicit Show next button setting. Page dots remain authored controls; there is no equivalent personal page-dots override in this priority chain.

Review personal Guide controls before changing several authored settings to compensate for one account's preferences.

Control automatic speech

Under Page speech, Automatic speech offers Use player setting or Disable automatic speech.

Use player setting respects the player's automatic-reading opt-in. Disabling automatic speech suppresses it throughout the Guide, even when a Page follows the player setting. An individual Page can also disable automatic speech. Neither level forces automatic reading on for a player who has not enabled it. Manual Speak remains available for supported content.

This control does not choose the cloud voice or prepare speech audio. Those belong to Voice and the speech workflow.

Check the result

Save, then Preview the affected sequence and pages. If a change seems ignored, check the priority table, the selected sequence, and the player's preferences. Review Warnings and test every forward path before hiding navigation controls. Keep visible content and manual controls usable when speech is disabled.
