Accessibility settings

Accessibility settings change how CareMap presents and plays Guides for your account. They do not change the authored Guide or another person's experience.

Open Accessibility settings

1. Open Settings from the main navigation.
2. Select Accessibility.
3. Change a preference. CareMap saves each change immediately.
4. Wait for the Saving label to disappear before changing another option.

Your saved choices follow your CareMap account on web, desktop, and mobile. Device capabilities still determine whether speech or haptics are available.

Describe your communication preferences

When Communication preferences is available, describe how CareMap should word author-created Guide content for you. You can explain personal words, preferred language, how much detail you want, or phrasing that is easier to understand. For example, you can explain that a personal word means “no,” ask for short sentences, or ask to be addressed directly.

Adapt communication is on by default, but adaptation starts only after you save non-empty instructions. Turning it off preserves your instructions. Guide authors can mark a block as verbatim; that block keeps its authored wording. CareMap never changes the Guide's stored source content.

Communication instructions are account-private. An Account Guardian can edit them only while using the existing Guardian pass-through experience.

Understand communication adaptation in a Guide

CareMap shows the author's original wording while a new adaptation is being prepared. A subtle Generating status identifies the affected text. When the adapted wording is ready, it replaces the visible wording without changing the Guide, your selected answer, or the value saved in a report. If adaptation is unavailable, the original wording remains usable and CareMap offers a retry when appropriate.

Reusing an existing communication adaptation does not use AI credits. Creating a new adaptation may use the active account's AI credits. When that account is below the minimum balance for new communication work, cached wording remains available but CareMap does not request another adaptation.

Recorded or uploaded Guide audio always plays as the author provided it. For other adapted speech, CareMap prepares speech from the adapted wording instead of playing generated audio made from the original wording. A Guide prepared for personalized offline use reports separately whether its communication adaptations and required speech are ready on this device. Reconnect and use Refresh offline if that status is incomplete or stale. Speech that depends on an answer or another value that does not exist while the Guide is being prepared keeps personalized communication readiness incomplete, even when the device can speak that value later as a fallback.

If a free-text or transcribed Guide response appears in a report, the report keeps the exact original response. It may also show a clearly labeled AI-assisted communication interpretation. That interpretation is optional and is not a verified fact or a replacement for the original response.

Use Shelf Mode

Turn on Use Shelf Mode to show only your Guide Shelf and Guide playback on every device signed in to your account. Turn it off from Accessibility settings to return to the full CareMap workspace. While the mode is active, press and hold the Settings gear at the bottom of the Shelf to open the complete Settings view; keyboard and assistive-technology activation does not require a hold.

Choose text, motion, haptics, and speech

The Voices section lets you create named cloud Voice Profiles, preview them, and choose your default. A profile combines an approved voice with its own Slow, Normal, or Fast cloud speed and follows your account across devices. See Voice Profiles.

• Guide text size: choose Standard, Large, or Extra large for player prompts.
• Navigation haptics: turn brief native feedback for mobile bottom-tab changes on or off. This requires a supported packaged mobile device.
• Motion: choose System to follow the current device's reduced-motion setting, or Reduce to minimize CareMap page motion.
• Speech rate: choose Slow, Normal, or Fast for device speech. Cloud Voice Profiles keep the speed saved in the profile.
• Speak first player page automatically: choose whether speech starts when a player session opens. An authored page set to always or never speak can override this default.

Customize Guide style

Use Guide style to adjust player presentation and navigation.

Navigation buttons stay at the bottom-left and bottom-right of the Guide, above any page dots and clear of the device safe area.

• Surface tone: Default, Soft, and Contrast are fixed account choices in Preview and playback. Default does not inherit the Guide's authored tone. The authored tone is a fallback when no player preferences are supplied, not an override of your account choice.
• Page button size: choose Small, Normal, Extra large, or XXL.
• Show previous button and Show next button: set fallback navigation when the Guide has not supplied its own behavior.
• Swipe between pages: allow or prevent swipe navigation during playback.
• Option layout: use the Guide's Default layout or Large tiles with labels beneath their visuals.
• Field answer display: show answer controls as Summary or Compact.

These choices also appear in Guide preview so you can review the experience before playback. They do not change the Guide saved by its author.

If a preference does not save or apply

If an error appears beneath the section, check your connection and select the preference again. The failed change is not kept. If motion looks unchanged while System is selected, check the device's reduced-motion preference. For speech or haptics, confirm the device supports the feature and CareMap is allowed to use it. If one Guide behaves differently, check whether its author set explicit navigation or page-speech behavior.
