Shelf Mode

Use a simplified, account-wide shelf of Guides and understand how supporters can help curate it.

Shelf Mode is a simplified CareMap experience for people who need a more predictable visual or cognitively accessible interface. When it is on, CareMap shows a shelf of large, front-facing Guide covers instead of the normal tabs, sidebar, workspace navigation, and authoring tools. Selecting a cover launches that Guide.

The setting belongs to the client account. Turning it on or off applies to every web, desktop, and mobile device signed in to that account.

Understand the Shelf rows

CareMap shows only rows that currently contain at least one available Guide:

  1. Scheduled appears first when the client has incomplete Guide work for today in the device's current timezone. It can include schedules and Guide assignments due today. Completed, skipped, Form, prior-day, and future-day work is not shown in this row.
  2. Favorites contains the client's active Guide favorites. Other favorite Library content, such as folders, Forms, Courses, templates, and files, is not shown in Shelf Mode.
  3. From <name> rows contain Guides contributed by an authorized supporter or one of the client's organizations. Each supporter has a profile-identified row, while Staff from the same organization share its organization row.

The same Guide can appear in more than one row. A normal tap or click launches it. Shelf Mode does not show favorite, remove, authoring, or overflow actions.

Scheduled stays in time order. The client can reorder Favorites and any supporter or organization row. Press and hold a cover without moving to enter reorder mode, then drag it or use Move left and Move right. Keyboard and assistive-technology users can use the visible reorder controls. Select Done to keep the order or Cancel to restore it.

Turn Shelf Mode on

From the normal CareMap experience:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility > Shelf Mode.
  3. Turn on Use Shelf Mode.

CareMap immediately replaces the normal authenticated navigation with the Shelf. Direct links to other workspace areas return to the Shelf while the mode is active. A Guide can open only when it is currently available in one of the Shelf rows.

An effective Account Guardian or Person Guardian can also open the client's profile and use Manage Shelf to turn the mode on or off without entering passthrough.

Open Settings or leave Shelf Mode

The Settings gear appears after the last Shelf row, or beneath the empty Shelf message. Press and hold the gear until its progress completes. This opens the full Settings experience without adding ordinary navigation to the Shelf. A keyboard or assistive-technology activation opens the same view without requiring a pointer hold. No PIN is required.

You can change accessibility and appearance preferences, review Mobile & Offline status, manage the account, or sign out from this Settings view. To restore the normal CareMap interface, select Accessibility > Shelf Mode and turn off Use Shelf Mode.

Let supporters contribute Guides

Shelf contributors manage the client directly from the client's Person or Contact profile. They do not need to enter passthrough.

  • An effective Account Guardian or Person Guardian can turn Shelf Mode on or off and add, remove, or order Guides in their own From <name> row.
  • An ordinary active contact can manage only their own row when the client has granted Pin Guides to my Shelf in that contact's Permissions.
  • Organization Owners, Manager Staff, and Staff can manage their organization's shared row while the client remains actively assigned to that organization.
  • Organization Members cannot curate the row.

Contributors can choose only Guides available to them, and they cannot change Scheduled, Favorites, or another contributor's row. The client can reorder a contributed row from Shelf Mode but cannot add or remove its Guides there.

A contributed Guide gives the client only the access needed to see, download, launch, and complete that Guide. It does not reveal the Guide in Library or grant permission to edit, copy, move, share, publish, or delete it. Removing a pin, contact permission, Guardian relationship, or organization assignment removes that access. Losing a Staff role prevents that contributor from managing the shared organization row, but does not remove pins left available through the active client assignment.

Use Shelf Guides offline

While a signed-in device is online, CareMap automatically prepares the Guides needed by Favorites, contributions, schedules, and assignments. Preparation uses any available connection, including cellular or metered service. Each device keeps its own account-isolated packages, so a shared device never makes one signed-in account's package available to another.

CareMap refreshes stale packages and retries recoverable connection or storage failures while the app can run. Open Settings > Mobile & Offline > Offline Packages to review Ready, Partial, Stale, or Failed packages and clean up device storage.

Removing a Guide from the Shelf does not necessarily delete an otherwise authorized package immediately. If access is revoked or the Guide is archived, CareMap removes the package the next time the device reconnects and reconciles. A true sign-out removes the active account's saved Guide packages from that device.

If the Shelf is empty or out of date

  • An empty message means no available Scheduled, Favorite, supporter, or organization row currently contains a Guide. The Settings gear remains available.
  • Reconnect and return CareMap to the foreground after a remote favorite, schedule, assignment, pin, identity, or access change.
  • If a cover remains unavailable offline, review Settings > Mobile & Offline and keep CareMap open while it retries.
  • If a supporter row is missing, confirm the Guardian/contact relationship or Pin Guides to my Shelf permission is still active.
  • If an organization row is missing, confirm the client assignment and the contributor's Staff role are still active.
