Voice Profiles
Choose named cloud voices and a default voice for spoken Guide content.
A Voice Profile gives an approved cloud voice a name and speed that make sense to you. Profiles belong to your account and follow you across CareMap devices. Your default profile is used when a Guide lets the learner choose the voice.
Create a Voice Profile
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- In Voices, select Add profile.
- Enter a Profile name and choose an active, available Platform Voice. Choosing a voice requests a short sample using the speed selected at that moment.
- Choose Slow (0.80×), Normal (1.00×), or Fast (1.15×). Changing the speed alone does not request another sample.
- Optionally select Use as my default cloud voice, then select Create profile.
The editor sample previews the unsaved voice and speed selection. It may play, still be preparing, or be unavailable; that result does not block editing or saving a valid profile. Preparing a sample may use available AI credits when CareMap does not already have the same speech ready.
After saving, use the profile row's Preview action to hear its stored voice and speed. This is separate from the automatic sample requested when you choose a Platform Voice in the editor.
Manage profiles and your default
Each saved row shows the Platform Voice, speed and multiplier, and whether the voice is available. Use its actions to Preview, make it the Default, Edit, Duplicate, or Delete.
A retired or unavailable Platform Voice remains visible on an existing profile for continuity, but it cannot be newly selected. Its saved preview and Default actions are unavailable until the voice becomes active and available again. Choose another available voice when editing the profile. If no active Platform Voice is available, Guides can still use author-supplied or device speech.
Without a profile default, CareMap uses the Platform Default at Normal speed. If no cloud default is available, CareMap uses device speech when needed.
The separate Speech rate accessibility preference controls device speech; it does not change the Slow, Normal, or Fast speed saved in a cloud Voice Profile.
Understand profiles used by Guide authors
When an author selects one of their profiles for a Guide, CareMap copies that selection into the Guide. Editing or deleting the original profile later does not change the authored Guide voice. This keeps published and shared Guide speech predictable.
If a profile is unavailable or cloud speech is not ready, CareMap can continue through the Guide's remaining speech options and use device speech. See Guide speech and cloud voices for the full order.
Fix common problems
- Preview is still preparing: Wait a moment, then select Preview again.
- The editor sample did not play: Continue editing and try another active voice. A preparing or unavailable sample does not discard the form.
- A voice is unavailable: Choose another active, available Platform Voice or use device speech until the voice is restored.
- A deleted default still appears in a Guide: The Guide saved an independent authored copy. Edit the Guide's Cloud voice to change it.
- The voice is too fast or slow: Edit the profile's cloud speed. Adjust Speech rate separately when the Guide is using device speech.
