Flashcard blocks with questions and answers

Use a Flashcard to show a question, then reveal an answer when the player taps it. Each side supports rich text and an optional separate image. You need Guide editing access to add or change a card.

Flipping does not submit a response, score the answer, or satisfy a required Field. Use a Field block when a response must be recorded.

Create the card

1. Open the Guide in the editor, select the page, and choose Add block > Flashcard. For an existing card, use Edit.
2. Rename it with the pencil beside its name if needed.
3. Enter Question text and Answer text.
4. Optionally select Choose question image or Choose answer image. Add an Image description for each chosen image.
5. Review the flip options, Card appearance, and Speech settings.
6. Wait for image work to finish, then select Save block and Preview both sides.

Use rich-text formatting for headings, emphasis, lists, links, or tables. Images inserted inside that text are separate from the dedicated question and answer images; see Images inside Guide text.

You can replace or remove either dedicated image independently. Clear, descriptive text is useful even with images: missing question or answer wording can produce warnings.

Choose the flip behavior

Show question above the answer starts off. Enable it to repeat the question text above the revealed answer. It does not repeat the separate question image.

Flip back after 5 seconds also starts off. Enable it for an automatic return to the question after revealing the answer. Without it, the player controls when to flip back. Consider leaving it off when readers need more time.

Set appearance and speech

The Card tab controls Card color, Card style, and Block alignment. The rich-text alignment setting is shared: changing it in Question text or Answer text affects both sides. The Flashcard content panel does not provide the Text block's Text size, Text color, or On tap controls.

Under Speech, the normal block text source is the question, not the answer. Flipping itself does not change that source into answer narration. Check the current source, particularly on imported cards.

A Spoken text override or custom speech audio can contain different wording, including the answer if you put it there. Keep those consistent with what players should hear before revealing the answer. Cloud voice changes use their own save controls. See Guide speech.

Use a Flashcard

Tap the card to reveal its answer; tap again to return to the question. With a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter or Space. Links inside the text keep their normal behavior.

The flip respects reduced-motion preferences. With automatic flip-back enabled, a reveal starts a five-second timer; manually returning cancels it. Do not treat that visual timer as a timed assessment or a recorded response.

The visible side is temporary playback state. In the Simplified player it can be retained when the presentation is rebuilt within the same page visit. Changing presentation or opening a popup is not a reliable reset control. Tap the card to return it to the question.

Fix common problems

• Empty answer: Reopen Answer text, add the explanation, and save.
• Answer disappears too quickly: Turn off Flip back after 5 seconds.
• Image missing: Check the source and connection, then replace it with an available image. Wait for uploads to finish before saving.
• Save block unavailable: Resolve pending image jobs or validation errors. Inline-image jobs offer Retry and Cancel.
• Speech gives away the answer: Review the spoken override and any custom recording as well as the visible question.

Preview both sides on the intended devices, check descriptions with assistive technology, and verify that the player can return to the question.
