Fix Smart PDF research and AI wording problems

Start by checking the selected field, saved answers, run status, and billing. Research and shortening are separate AI operations; retrying one does not repair or rerun the other.

Research controls are missing or disabled

Research appears only for text or checkbox fields configured for AI research in the draft's saved layout. A signature cannot be researched. Ask the template author to adjust future layouts if the intended field is absent.

Save local edits, attach or clear signature ink, and wait for document processing. An existing research run or unresolved charge blocks another research request for that same field. Use Refresh research or Research history to inspect it.

No supporting evidence found

This message means no usable evidence was gathered for the configured sources, dates, and current access. Answer generation was skipped and no research credits were charged. The saved answer is unchanged.

Check whether Notes concern the intended subject, Profile Documents are current and searchable, Reports remain accessible, and the source dates match the configured window. Wait for pending content to become searchable or ask the author to review future template settings.

Then use Retry research… and review the new charge confirmation. Retrying does not change the draft's captured source settings. A result that merely says it Needs an answer after AI ran is different: that run may be charged.

A saved result cannot open or apply

Changed or inaccessible evidence can make a research proposal unavailable. Choose Return to field when offered, inspect the current answer, and request fresh research only if needed. Source reopening never changes the saved answer.

A shortening result can belong to an earlier answer or PDF wording. Choose Return to current PDF wording to edit manually or request a new proposal. If opening history failed because of connectivity, use Refresh history and try again before starting new AI work.

Shortening failed

The message can distinguish empty output, an output limit, filtering, unusable wording, funding failure, or unavailable content. The saved full answer remains. Edit wording manually, keep the full answer, or explicitly request a new charged suggestion after checking the prior run's billing.

Credits or billing are blocking work

Check the actual funding rules, not just your own balance. Organization-template fallback requires qualifying organization Staff access and allowance. Storage still belongs to the profile owner's personal workspace.

While Checking provider billing; do not retry yet appears, refresh status and allow settlement to finish. Contact support if it persists. Closing the editor, deleting other drafts, or assuming a timeout was free does not resolve that charge. Deletion stays unavailable until the run is eligible.
