Single choice fields
Use a Single choice field to let someone select one option.
Use a Single choice field when someone should select exactly one answer from a list. The choices can appear as radio buttons or in a dropdown.
Add and configure the field
You need edit access to the Form.
- Open the Form from Library and select the section that needs the field.
- Select Add field or content, then choose Single choice under Fields.
- Enter a clear Label and optional Help text.
- Edit the starter choices. Use Add choice for another option, Delete choice to remove one, and Move choice up to change their order.
- Under Presentation, choose Radio buttons or Dropdown.
- Turn Allow Other on when people may enter an answer that is not listed.
- Choose whether the field is Required, then select Done.
New Single choice fields start as required with two choices. Selecting Cancel or closing the editor discards changes made since it was opened; Done applies the draft and saves it to the Form.
What people see while filling
Radio buttons show every named option at once. A dropdown keeps the list compact and begins with a prompt to choose an answer. Selecting a new option replaces the previous selection in either presentation.
When Allow Other is on, choosing Other opens a text box. The Other choice only counts as an answer after text has been entered. A required field must have a named option or a completed Other response before the person can continue or submit the Form.
Use Preview to confirm that the label, help text, choice order, and presentation are easy to understand on the intended screen size.
Grading and Records
When a quiz mode is enabled in Form settings, a Single choice field can be Ungraded or Automatically graded. For automatic grading, select one named choice as the correct answer. The submitted choice must match that answer key; an Other response does not match a named-choice key.
When Person Record targeting is available, you can connect the field to a compatible text or single-choice Record Type and map the choices as prompted. This is optional and does not change how the field appears in the Form.
Fix common problems
- The Form reports a missing choice: Add at least one named choice, or turn on Allow Other.
- The Form reports an unlabeled choice: Open the field and give every choice a non-empty label, or delete the unused choice.
- The answer is still required after choosing Other: Enter text in the Other response box.
- The choices take too much space: Change Presentation to Dropdown.
- The field cannot be scored: Enable a quiz mode in Form settings, choose Automatically graded, and select one correct named choice.
