Download a Course or Reference package

Save authored lessons, assessments, settings, and media as a portable .course archive.

A .course package transfers authored Course or Reference content to another Library. Both project modes use the same file extension.

You need edit access, a workspace that permits authoring, and available authoring capacity to prepare an export. Restore an archived project first. Ordinary learner access does not allow package export.

Download the archive

  1. Find the Course or Reference in Library.
  2. Open its actions menu and select Download.
  3. In Download Course or Reference, wait for Succeeded.
  4. Review the size and packaged-asset count.
  5. Select Download .course and complete your device's save flow.
  6. Check that the file reached the intended location.

Opening the dialog starts export preparation. The resulting archive is limited to 25 MiB (26,214,400 bytes), including bundled media.

What is included

The package keeps the project mode, name, description, lesson or chapter content, appearance, cover, and supported managed media. Course packages also include authored quizzes, final assessments, answer keys, explanations, passing thresholds, shuffle settings, and certificate configuration.

It excludes learner enrollment, progress, completed attempts, issued certificates, source sharing, and publication history. Importing the package does not enroll anyone or publish a Catalog version.

External media stays linked to its provider. Catalog references stay references; the archive does not include the linked Catalog content or grant access to it.

A structurally valid draft can be transferred before it is ready to publish. Review the result's readiness before publishing or using it with learners.

Follow package history

Package history shows recent export/import jobs. Refresh checks the current job and history without preparing another export.

If Automatic updates paused appears, select Refresh to check again. That notice describes status updates; it does not establish that the export was canceled.

For a failed export, Retry appears while attempts remain. After correcting the cause, use it to retry that job. Reopening Download starts another export request.

Recover a failed download

If preparation succeeded but saving failed or was canceled, retry the download. Web uses browser downloads, desktop offers a save dialog, and mobile uses a share sheet.

For preparation errors, check source access and media. Every referenced managed original must be readable; an incomplete media bundle prevents a complete export. Reduce media size or divide a large project if the 25 MiB limit is exceeded.

Store the archive appropriately: it can contain answer keys and sensitive content. Later access changes cannot withdraw an already saved file.
