Platform Voice defaults and retirement

Choose the shared default, revalidate unavailable voices, and understand permanent retirement.

Global administrators manage shared voice availability in Admin → Content → Voices. These changes can affect personal Voice Profiles and new Guide speech.

Choose the Platform Default

  1. Find an active Google voice marked Available.
  2. Select Make default.
  3. Check that Platform Default appears on that row.

This change saves immediately. CareMap allows one Platform Default at a time; choosing another replaces the previous designation. Adding the first voice does not select a default automatically, and the catalog can have none.

Accounts without a usable personal default inherit this voice at Normal speed. An available personal default remains preferred. Authored Guide voice choices and already-generated audio are separate; changing the Platform Default does not rewrite them.

Revalidate availability

Select Validate on an active row, then inspect Status and Validated.

  • Available: the last successful validation found the voice.
  • Unavailable: validation could not find that provider voice.
  • Unknown: availability has not been established.
  • Retired: the voice has been permanently withdrawn from new use.

A temporary provider, credential, or rate-limit error can leave the previously saved status and validation time unchanged. Refreshing only reloads that saved result. Resolve the error and use Validate again.

Successful revalidation can restore an unavailable active voice. Existing profiles retain their selection, including default status, so a usable personal default can take effect again.

A Platform Default that becomes unavailable retains its designation but cannot supply new speech. Choose another available default if needed. Validation and generation are separate: a voice can validate while new cloud generation is disabled.

Retire a voice

  1. If it is the Platform Default, first choose an available replacement when you want to preserve a shared cloud default.
  2. Select Retire on the intended row.
  3. Read the Retire Platform Voice confirmation.
  4. Select Retire voice, or Cancel to keep it active.

Retirement is permanent. The row remains for history, and its label can still be edited. Preview, Validate, and new default selection are unavailable. There is no Restore or permanent Delete action, and adding the same provider ID again does not bypass retirement.

Retiring the current default clears that designation. CareMap does not automatically promote another active voice.

Understand existing content

Retirement preserves existing personal profiles and authored Guide selections. It prevents new selections and new generation with that voice; it does not invalidate already-generated playable audio.

A profile using the voice remains visible. Its owner can choose an active replacement. New speech uses another usable choice in the normal Guide voice hierarchy, eventually falling back to device speech when no cloud choice is usable.

Use Audit to review recorded voice changes.

Replace legacy voices

Open Legacy voice migration in the Voices page. Choose a Legacy voice and a Curated Google replacement, then Save replacement mapping. Preview the replacement first: it is a different voice, not an identical copy.

Saving a mapping does not change profile records, Guide snapshots, stored audio, or the Platform Default. It supplies an explicit replacement when legacy speech needs new generation. Ready historical audio remains playable.

Review the listed profiles and select up to 100 per batch. Migrate selected profiles keeps their names, speeds, and default selections while updating the voice. It does not generate audio or migrate authored Guide bindings. Review later batches separately. Guide editors update their selected draft bindings through the Guide replacement controls; published snapshots remain unchanged.

Select a Google Platform Default separately. No migration action here deletes historical audio or automatically regenerates an entire library.
