Fix Smart PDF draft and completion problems

Recover missing draft actions, stale saves, signature blocks, and failed PDF generation.

Keep the Smart PDF editor open when an action fails. Error messages preserve the local answers where possible, so you can retry or copy changes before leaving. Previously saved answers remain available unless the draft is deliberately discarded.

Missing actions or templates

New document from Smart PDF and saved drafts require Profile Documents write access. View-only users can read completed documents. The template picker also requires access to the Library folder containing an active Smart PDF.

Clear the picker search and confirm the Library PDF was made into a Smart PDF. If it is still missing, ask the owner to check sharing. A draft already started keeps its saved source and layout under profile access rules.

Save or preview is disabled

Save draft requires changed answers. Pending signature ink must be accepted with Use drawn signature or removed with Clear drawing before saving, previewing, or completing. Attaching a drawing is followed by saving the draft.

Wait while a save or render is processing. The PDF tab requires a current preview; changing answers makes the previous preview outdated.

The draft changed

If another save changed the same draft, copy the unsaved text you need to keep. Close the editor and choose Discard changes for that local copy, then reopen Continue draft, review the latest saved answers, and reapply your changes. Do not use permanent saved-draft discard for this recovery.

If the draft is already completed, preserve needed edits and start Edit answers from the completed document. If a newer completed document is active, use Review replacement before completing your draft.

Preview or completion failed

A failed render leaves saved answers in the draft. Failed completion creates no new current revision; any existing completed document remains current.

Retry PDF preview or Retry document completion repeats the same saved operation. It excludes unsaved changes and is available to the original requester. If the draft changed, use Preview PDF or Complete document to save and process the current answers instead.

Follow the message's recovery advice:

  • Connection or temporary service failure: check connectivity and retry.
  • Missing access or source: ask the owner to check availability and permissions.
  • Answer or signature problem: correct the content, save, and request a new render.
  • Layout or processing problem: ask the template author or support to investigate.

Expand Support details for the operation and diagnostic code. Avoid repeatedly retrying an unchanged layout problem. The generated PDF must fit within 50,000,000 bytes; very large answers or signatures can also prevent rendering.

For missing-answer validation, fill required fields and review every nonempty suggestion. For storage failures, check the profile owner's personal allowance. Starting over with another draft does not repair access or storage limits.
