Upload fields

An Upload field collects files with a Form response. Use it for documents, photos, recordings, or other evidence. It differs from a Display image, which the author places in the Form for everyone to view.

Configure an Upload field

You need edit access to an active Form in an authoring-enabled workspace.

1. Select the builder section, then Add field or content > Fields > Upload.
2. Enter a Label and optional Help text.
3. Review Required; keep it on when at least one ready file is needed.
4. Under Allowed files, choose Image, Audio, Video, or File as appropriate.
5. Optionally enter Accepted MIME types and Accepted extensions.
6. Enable Allow multiple files if needed and set Maximum files.
7. Select Done, wait for saving, and test the restrictions.

A new Upload field is required and allows one File. Turning on multiple files sets the maximum to five; you can choose a whole number from 1–25. Turning it off returns the maximum to one. Turning it on again resets it to five.

Upload fields are always ungraded. New Upload items are added when Done succeeds; see item saving.

Choose file restrictions carefully

File allows any file category, including images, audio, and video. It does not mean documents only. To restrict the question to images, select Image and clear File.

Choose allowed categories deliberately and recheck the saved field. Clearing every category returns to File when saved; it does not create a question that accepts no uploads.

Optional filters narrow the allowed categories:

• MIME types use comma-separated values, such as image/png, application/pdf. A group such as image/* is also supported.
• Extensions use comma-separated values such as png, pdf, docx. A leading dot is accepted and removed.
• Leave a filter blank to add no restriction of that kind.
• When both filters are set, the file must satisfy both.

These rules also apply after the system file picker allows a selection. A filename alone does not establish its file type. For example, an image with no reported MIME type can fail an image-only rule even with a .png name.

Test the full answer flow

Use uploading and replacing answer files to check file counts, filenames, replacement, removal, and failure recovery.

Preview creates no submitted Report, but choosing a file there performs a real upload and uses workspace storage. Use appropriate test files.

Fix configuration problems

If Done fails, check the maximum count and any retained settings. Reopen the saved field to confirm the categories and filters actually accepted.

A successful upload must still satisfy the field's current rules at submission. Workspace storage and file-size limits also apply; a permissive field does not remove those limits. Use the displayed failure message for the applicable restriction rather than assuming every file below the count limit will work.
