Text lesson items

Add formatted written content to a Course lesson or Reference chapter.

Use a Text item for written instructions, explanations, summaries, links, or other reading content inside a Course lesson. References support the same item inside a chapter.

Add a Text item

You need edit access to the Course or Reference.

  1. Open the item in Library, then select the lesson or chapter that should contain the writing.
  2. Under Add content, select Text.
  3. Write the lesson or chapter content in the editor.
  4. Use the formatting tools for headings, bold, italic, underline, code, lists, checklist items, links, and tables when they help the content scan clearly.
  5. Move the item into the intended position with the other lesson content.
  6. Wait for the builder to show Saved, then use Preview to read through the content before publishing.

A lesson or chapter can contain multiple Text items. Use separate Text items when the writing should be split around images, videos, audio, Catalog links, or quizzes.

What learners see

In Learn, Text appears directly in the lesson or chapter with CareMap's reading layout. Learners can select the content, open links, and read it on web, desktop, or mobile.

Text items do not create a score or require a separate action from the learner. For Courses, lesson completion still uses Complete Lesson and any required lesson Quiz. For References, Text is part of the chapter content and does not track completion.

Write accessible lesson text

  • Put the most important instruction near the top of the item.
  • Use headings and lists to break up long explanations.
  • Make link text descriptive, such as the resource name or next step.
  • Keep tables simple enough to read on smaller screens.
  • Do not rely on pasted HTML. Use the editor's formatting tools or plain Markdown-style formatting instead.

Fix common problems

  • The Text item looks blank: Return to the builder and check that the item contains visible writing, not just spaces or formatting.
  • Formatting looks different in Preview: Simplify the formatting and use the toolbar options that appear in the editor.
  • A link opens unexpectedly: Check the link target and make sure the linked page is appropriate for every learner who can access the Course or Reference.
  • The writing is in the wrong place: Move the Text item up or down in the lesson or chapter.
  • Changes are not saved: Use Retry save. If CareMap reports a newer version, use Reload latest, then review the Text item again.
