Image lesson items

Add an accessible image and optional caption to a Course lesson.

Use an Image lesson item to place a picture within a Course lesson. CareMap shows the picture with its optional caption and uses the authored Alt text for learners who use assistive technology.

Add an image to a lesson

You need edit access to the Course's Library folder to upload or replace its images.

  1. Open the Course in Library, then select the lesson that should contain the picture.
  2. Under Add content, select Image.
  3. In Image file, choose a PNG, JPEG, GIF, or WebP file up to 50 MB.
  4. Enter Alt text that briefly describes the useful information in the picture. Leave it empty only when the image is decorative and adds no information.
  5. Add a Caption when visible context or attribution will help learners.
  6. Review the Alt text, wait for the item to show Ready, and move it into the intended position.
  7. Use Preview to check the image and caption.
  8. Wait for the Course to show Saved before leaving the builder.

Image lesson items use uploaded files; an external image URL cannot be attached to the item. A lesson can contain multiple images, but a Course cannot be published while a media item has no source.

Understand image states

  • Uploading means the file is still being transferred. CareMap may show a temporary preview during this step.
  • Processing means CareMap is preparing the image. You can keep editing while this finishes.
  • Ready means the image is available in Preview and Learn.
  • Failed means the image could not be prepared. The item shows the reason when one is available.

Learners see the image and caption on web, desktop, and mobile, while assistive technology receives the Alt text. An Image item does not record a score or require an action before lesson completion; add a Quiz when learners should demonstrate understanding.

Fix common problems

  • The file is rejected: Confirm that its format is supported and that it is no larger than 50 MB, then choose it again.
  • The image stays unavailable: Wait for Processing to finish. If the item becomes Failed, choose a replacement file.
  • The wrong image is attached: Select Clear image, then choose the correct file. Clearing detaches the image from this lesson item.
  • Alt text is missing or inaccurate: Edit Alt text, then check the Course reaches Saved.
  • The Course does not save: Use Retry save. If CareMap reports a newer version, use Reload latest, then review the Image item again.
