Spoken answers

Collect a spoken answer as a reviewed transcript without changing Guide speech playback.

Use a Speak answer method when a player should respond aloud and review the captured words before saving. CareMap saves the transcript as the Field answer and, when included, in the Report. It does not attach captured microphone audio. You need Guide edit access to configure the method.

Separate answer capture from Guide speech

Speak answer is an input method: CareMap listens to the player and turns the response into editable text for review and saving.

By contrast, the Field block's Speech tab and Cloud voice settings are playback controls. They speak prompt content through authored wording, audio, a cloud voice, or device speech; they neither listen for an answer nor change its recognition or storage. See Guide speech and cloud voices.

Voice Profiles, authored cloud voice snapshots, and Speech rate affect playback only. They do not select the microphone, recognition language, or capture service for a Speak answer.

Add and configure a Speak answer

  1. Open the Guide in the editor and select the Field block that should collect the response.
  2. Open Answer methods, select Add method, and choose Speak answer.
  3. Give the method a clear label and customize Instructions so the player knows what to say.
  4. Customize the Transcript placeholder if the default review prompt does not fit the question.
  5. Keep Allow typed fallback when speech recognition is unavailable on if players should be able to type when voice capture is unsupported or blocked. Test every intended device before turning it off.
  6. In Advanced settings, optionally set minimum or maximum transcript lengths, helper and error text, and report settings.
  7. Review the Field block's required setting, save the block, and preview the Guide.

Turning off typed fallback prevents a player from starting with a typed response. A transcript produced by voice capture can still be reviewed and corrected before it is saved.

Capture and save a spoken answer

  1. Select Speak answer if the Field offers more than one answer method.
  2. Select Start capture and allow microphone or speech-recognition access if the device asks.
  3. Speak the answer. CareMap may show interim words while it is listening.
  4. Select Stop capture when finished.
  5. Review the transcript and correct any words that were captured incorrectly.
  6. Select Save answer.

The Save button appears after there is a non-empty changed transcript. Voice capture must be stopped before the answer can be saved. A saved transcript can be edited and saved again later.

On a supported packaged mobile app, CareMap uses the device's speech capture. Otherwise, it can use speech recognition supplied by the browser. Availability and permission prompts therefore vary by device, browser, operating system, and language. When neither capture path is available, the transcript box stays available only if the author allowed typed fallback.

Required answers, validation, and Reports

If the Field block is required, the player needs a saved answer for that block before finishing the Guide. An optional Field block can be skipped.

CareMap checks any authored minimum or maximum transcript length before saving. The player must correct the transcript when the configured validation message appears. Choosing voice capture or typing does not change those rules.

When the method is included in reports, the saved transcript appears with the Field answer for people who can access the completed Guide Report. The Report contains the transcript rather than captured microphone audio. Preview answers do not create a Report.

Fix common problems

  • Capture is unavailable or permission was denied: Allow microphone and speech-recognition access, try a supported browser or device, or type when fallback is allowed.
  • No speech was detected: Check the microphone, reduce background noise, and retry or type when fallback is allowed.
  • The answer will not save: Stop capture, make sure the transcript is not empty, and satisfy any length message. If saving still fails, check the connection and try again.
  • The answer is missing from the Report: Make sure Save answer finished and that the method is included in reports.
  • The Guide does not speak its prompt: That is a playback issue rather than Speak answer capture. See Troubleshoot Guide speech.
