Use Goal mode for Guide authoring

Let Guide AI continue a defined job across turns, review its outcome, and stop automatic continuation.

Goal mode lets Codex continue working across turns on a stated objective. It can keep running after you close the panel or leave the Guide.

Use it for a defined job with several steps. Each turn can use AI credits; enabling Goal mode is not a fixed-price purchase or a credit budget.

Start a goal

  1. Open the Guide's Agent in Codex mode.
  2. Select the composer's More options plus button.
  3. Turn on Goal mode.
  4. Write the objective, required content, constraints, and how you will judge the result.
  5. Select Send message, or Queue message if work is already underway.
  6. Watch Goal active, progress, questions, and Guide synchronization.
  7. Review the final summary and accepted Guide before using the result.

For example: “Finish the five-page kitchen-safety Guide. Use short instructions, include a completion response on each activity, preserve the introduction, and check that every intended route works.”

Switching Goal mode on alone does not start work. A queued goal starts when its request is processed.

Understand continuation

The agent reports progress at the end of each goal turn. When more work remains and new progress was reported, CareMap can schedule the next turn.

Your queued messages take precedence over an automatic continuation and can redirect the job. Questions can pause progress until you answer. Use the normal queue and question controls.

The job can end when the agent reports completion, needs your direction, fails, is interrupted, or repeats progress without advancing. The summary explains the recorded outcome.

Goal completedInspect the Guide, synchronization status, and Preview
Goal needs your directionRead the summary and provide the missing decision or correction
Goal stoppedReview accepted changes before requesting more work

A completion report is the agent's assessment. It does not replace your review of wording, accessibility, routes, required responses, or pending conflicts.

Stop or continue deliberately

Use Stop work, or turn off Goal mode, to stop an active goal. Turning it off during an active goal sends the same stop request rather than merely changing the next message's setting.

Stop cancels pending messages in that conversation and retains accepted edits. It does not erase the job's credit usage.

After a blocked or stopped job, inspect the current result before sending a new request. Confirm the Goal mode setting: if it remains on, your next message can start another multi-turn job. Turn it off first for an ordinary follow-up.

The completed job card shows Job total, turn count, elapsed duration, and charged credits. If final usage is pending, that total may update later. See Guide AI credits.
