Queue, steer, and answer Guide AI

Control follow-up requests, change queued prompts, and answer questions without restarting the conversation.

While Codex mode works, you can queue a follow-up, send direction to the active turn, or answer a question it needs resolved.

Queue a follow-up

  1. Keep the relevant Codex conversation selected.
  2. Write the next instruction while work is running.
  3. Select Queue message.
  4. Review it under Queued prompts.
  5. Let it start after the current turn, or choose one of its controls.

Queued prompts can include attachments and a Goal mode setting. A queued message is not yet evidence that the agent has acted on it.

ControlResult
Edit queued promptChange the text, then select Save prompt
Cancel editLeave the queued text unchanged
Delete queued promptRemove a prompt that has not started
Steer nowPromote a queued message into direction for the active turn

Editing a queued prompt changes its text; its existing attachments remain. Use a new request when you need different supporting files.

Steer the current work

Use Steer now when the direction should affect work already underway, such as “Keep the existing images” or “Use fewer words on each page.”

The control is available only for a queued message with a currently steerable turn. If that turn has ended or the prompt has already started, review the latest state. The prompt may remain queued; a turn that finishes during delivery can instead receive the direction in a following turn.

Queue changes check the version you reviewed. If another tab or the agent has changed its state, reload the current queue rather than assuming an edit or deletion succeeded.

Answer a question

  1. Find the question card in the conversation.
  2. Select an offered option, or choose Write an answer when available.
  3. Fill in every question in that group.
  4. Select Send answer.
  5. Wait for acknowledgement and resumed work.

Free-text answers support up to 8,000 characters per answer. An offered selection is not submitted until you select Send answer.

Answer received; waiting for acknowledgement means delivery is still pending. Do not send the same direction repeatedly. A rejected or outdated answer needs review against the current question.

Stop unwanted work

Select Stop work in the conversation you want to stop. It requests interruption and cancels that conversation's pending messages and steering requests. Wait for Stopping to settle before assuming it has ended.

Stop keeps already accepted Guide changes. Deleting a queued prompt likewise does not undo earlier changes. Inspect the Guide and make any needed corrections afterward.

Closing the panel or starting a new chat does not send Stop. For long-running multi-turn work, see Goal mode.
