Video lesson items

Use a Video item to place an uploaded video or YouTube video inside a Course lesson. References support the same item inside a chapter.

Add a Video item

You need edit access to the Course or Reference.

1. Open the item in Library, then select the lesson or chapter that should contain the video.
2. Under Add content, select Video.
3. In Video source, choose Upload video file or YouTube link.
4. For an upload, choose the Video file and wait for its processing status to become ready. For YouTube, enter a valid YouTube URL.
5. Add a short Caption and Alt text to identify or explain the video. The caption appears below an uploaded video and can also name an embedded video for assistive technology.
6. Move the item into the intended position, wait for Saved, then use Preview to check playback before publishing.

A lesson or chapter can contain multiple Video items. A Course cannot be published while a media item has no source.

Choose and change the source safely

Upload video file stores the video with the Course. CareMap may show uploading or processing states before the video is ready. You can continue editing, but confirm that processing completes before publishing.

YouTube link embeds the YouTube player. Learners need access to YouTube and the linked video must remain available to its intended audience.

Changing Video source clears the source that was previously selected. Copy any URL you need to keep before switching, and expect to upload the file again if you switch away from it.

What learners see

Uploaded videos play in CareMap with standard video controls and their caption. YouTube videos appear in an embedded player that supports full-screen viewing. The Video item itself does not record a score; add a lesson Quiz when learners should demonstrate understanding before completing the lesson.

Fix common problems

• The Course is not ready to publish: Select a file or enter a valid YouTube URL for every Video item.
• An upload is still processing: Wait for the status to become ready. If it fails, clear the video and choose another supported video file.
• A YouTube video does not play: Check the URL, the video's audience or privacy settings, and whether the learner can reach YouTube.
• The previous source disappeared: Switching between upload and YouTube intentionally clears the other source. Select or enter the intended source again.
• Changes are not saved: Use Retry save. If CareMap reports a newer version, use Reload latest, then review the Video item again.
