Page timers and automatic outcomes

Enable a Guide page timer, choose its outcome and indicator, and understand duration, delay, and retry limits.

A page timer runs an authored outcome after time on a Guide page. It can navigate, display information, or finish the Guide; it does not always mean “next page.”

You need Guide edit access to configure it. Select the page, then open Page > Page settings > Runtime.

Configure a timer

  1. Turn on Enable page timer.
  2. Set Timer seconds from 1 to 3,600 whole seconds.
  3. Choose a Timer indicator.
  4. Set When the timer finishes to the intended outcome and complete its destination or text.
  5. Set the outcome's timing, then select Save page.
  6. Preview from this page and confirm the actual result.

Choose None when the timer should have no outcome. Turn off Enable page timer to stop using the timer. A Next page outcome needs a following page in the same sequence; it does not finish a terminal page or continue into another sequence. Choose an explicit sequence or finishing outcome for those cases.

See page outcomes for the shared choices and the difference between Close guide and Finish guide with a message.

Add duration and outcome delay

A configured timer starts when the page opens, independently of its entry outcome. For ordinary outcomes, the timer duration and action delay add together. For example, a 10-second timer with a 3-second override requests its action after 13 seconds.

Follow player setting uses the saved player action delay. Override player setting replaces that delay with 0–3,600 seconds. An entry action has its own delay and does not postpone a configured timer.

For Finish guide with a message, the message appears when the timer finishes. The outcome delay determines its visible reading time, with a minimum of three seconds, before closing.

Older next-page timers that have no explicitly configured timer outcome can include the entry-action delay before their duration. Reopen Runtime and explicitly configure When the timer finishes when updating those Guides.

Choose an indicator

HiddenNo timer indicator
Progress barProgress through the configured duration
CountdownRemaining seconds for that duration

The indicator does not include the additional outcome delay. A countdown reaching zero therefore does not guarantee immediate navigation. Hidden changes the display, not the timer. After popup or other presentation changes, verify the actual action rather than treating the visual indicator as a completion receipt.

Recover when the action does not run

  • Check that the timer is enabled, the outcome is not None, and its destination still exists.
  • Check the extra outcome delay and any automatic-speech restrictions.
  • Save required answers before the timer expires. A blocked timer outcome is not automatically retried when an answer is saved afterward; use an available manual control or leave and enter the page again.
  • Closing a popup resumes the underlying page's remaining outcome time. Returning with Previous from an automatic transition suppresses automatic entry and timer actions on that return.
  • Review Warnings and test a fresh visit. Keep another usable route available when required answers or unavailable content could block the timed action.
